Stephen Colbert, 2008
Twice this week Instapundit has mentioned Stephen Colbert for President. First there was an item about the fake FEMA press conference ("In the Colbert Administration, all press conferences will be done this way!"). Then tonight Glenn posted about the 1,000,000 Strong for Stephen T Colbert Facebook group (which, unlike Senator Obama, actually has a million members).
Volokh Conspiracy has also touched on Colbert and campaign finance rules. The FEC is taking a very close and serious look at his campaign because of his show's sponsorship by Doritos.
Whether he's a serious candidate or not, he's certainly getting a lot of press coverage. I think his goal should not be South Carolina, but to actually participate in two of the debates, one for each party he's running in. I guarantee they would be the most watched debates ever.

Monday, October 29, 2007 at 07:05 AMThis may be the time to remind those voting for President that the Executive has a very hard time implementing *any* policy that needs go through Congress. We hear much of grandiose plans and such every cycle, but the actual ability of a President to get them relies on Congress. One cannot mock the entire process enough because no one in the Media bothers with that and tries to find what the actual policies of the candidates *are* and how they plan to implement them sans Congressional help.
A bit of humor just might point out the actual *joke* of these candidates on both sides, and convince a few that if they cannot get the level of support as a satirist then it is *they* that are the joke. Lighten up, America, stop taking petty differences so seriously and start addressing the issues of the day. And ask why a humorist can *get* support from their views to poke fun at them... it might point out that those views *are* jokes.
Colbert in 2008: this time the joke is on you!

Monday, October 29, 2007 at 08:17 AMPangs of nostalgia for Pat Paulsen (who was watched by more people expotentially than Colbert is watched by). In fact, Pat's platform was much more challenging to understand since it was so ambiguous (just like the mainstream candidate's). It was based mostly on his "editorials" he wrote and discussed on The Smother's Brothers. Now, folks, this is 1967 and 1968! He editorialized at that time on the then, and present, topical topics such as gun control, medical care, space policy, censorship (free speech) and congressional ethics. About the only thing that has changed since then has been the WoT but Pat would have run circles around Colbert on that one too. No, Colbert has no chance to overtake the one and only Pat Paulsen as the smartest man never to have beenn President.
